Hamlet asked the fundamental question: “to be, or not to be?” However, Hamlet never had access to Twitter.

Twitter is one of the fastest-paced social medial platforms with the capacity to help brands thrive in a competitive market. Recent statistics suggest that:

  • Social media produces twice as many leads as other venues such as trade shows, PPC campaigns, direct mail or telemarketing.
  • Social media conversion rates are 13 percent higher than those of other media.
  • Social media is growing in importance. At least 21 percent of marketers say that social media is more important to their company now than six months ago.
  • While only 60 percent of average users recommend brands to others, 85 percent of Facebook users do so.
  • Customers of HubSpot who have more than 1,000 Twitter followers generate at least 800 new website visitors each month.
  • About 46 percent of online shoppers use social media before making a purchasing decision.

It is clear that social media is growing in importance to SEO marketers. However, it is vital that Twitter users also understand how to use analytics in order to measure their successes in using this medium.

How To Analyze Twitter Use

There are three important tools for tracking Twitter usage: Twitter Analytics, Bitly and Klout. Each has its own place as a tool for analyzing how effective Twitter is in your marketing campaigns.

1.) Twitter Analytics. Twitter Analytics is a tab in the Ads section of the Twitter page. It drops down to reveal timeline activity. By mousing over a date, you can see the count of mentions, follows and unfollows. You can also check out the statistics on individual posts on other media as well as analytics on your followers.

2.) Klout. Klout offers analytic tools in addition to its social assessment capabilities. Klout offers a 90-day snapshot of social media influence and can handle not only your Twitter information but that of Facebook, LinkedIn, Foursquare, Instagram, Google+, Tumblr, Wordpress, Blogger, YouTube and Bing accounts. Klout not only gives information on frequency but also provides a breakdown of where users are being engaged and top “influential moments.”

3.) Bitly. Bitly counts how many times a link is clicked. It breaks down link traffic per user so you can see how many people clicked on a link from your site even if the link is retweeted.
